Franciscan Corner

In the Franciscan tradition, today is the feast of the Portiuncula (Italian) also called The Little Portion. This small chapel, which Francis repaired, is where Francis began the Franciscan order. When the Sisters of St Francis closed St Joseph Family Center in 2017, they wanted to continue to share their Franciscan spirituality here in Spokane and looked for a new location. They found a home in a familiar place –St Charles parish. Two Sisters opened “The Little Portion”, a ministry of spiritual direction, retreats and accompaniment. It was a homecoming for them because in 1951 this same congregation of Franciscan Sisters opened St Charles school. Who says you can’t go home again?

(Thank you to Sr. Joanne for sharing these Franciscan reflections with us.)

Franciscan Corner

Outside the walls. Down from Assisi, outside the walls, is a little chapel called the Portiuncula (The Little Portion). It was erected around 355 by hermits who were said to have brought relics from the grave of the Blessed Virgin. The chapel belonged to the Benedictine monks. In the time of Francis, it was abandoned and in bad condition. Francis rebuilt this church after he heard the words “go, rebuild my church which you see if falling into ruin.” It was here Francis lived, here that he founded the Franciscan order by building huts around it for his men, here that he received Clare and thus founded the second order, the Poor Ladies, aka, the Poor Clares. It was here that he welcomed men and women who wanted to follow him and became the third order, and it was here that Francis came to die. Good things happened outside the walls, outside security. Any good thing happening outside your walls?

Franciscan Corner

Outside the walls. Did you know that when Franciscans opened a new mission, they always did so “outside” the walls of the city? When St Francis parish, here in Spokane, was founded, it was on the outer limits of the city. You wouldn’t think so today, but as city expanded, it pushed out further and so today St Francis parish in no longer “outside”. Why did Franciscans always want to be outside the “walls”? Because that’s where the poor were, that’s where the poor still are. Walls don’t have to be made of brick and mortar or iron beams. There can be walls around our hearts, around our attitudes, around our imaginations, around our love. We choose to live within the walls, or we choose to live outside them. What do choice do we make today?

(Thank you to Sr. Joanne for sharing these Franciscan reflections with us.)

Outside the walls. Francis of Assisi born 1182, died 1226. He was frail in his youth. He had a long recovery from sickness he got while in the prison in Perugia. He embraced and kissed a leper! He didn’t take care of Brother Body, and thus he was ill for much of his life. Some think he died of a form of leprosy. He died outside the walls of Assisi. He died away from family. He died surrounded by those who became his brothers. Today many people are dying away from their family, family members are not allowed to be with them. They are dying surrounded by doctors and nurses who have become family. Let us pray for those who have died, for their families and for their “new” family members who held their hands as they took their last breathe and entered paradise.

If you need assistance to sign up, call the parish office. Thank you for your participation!

Prayer Requests
* Please pray for Paul B. who passed away this week, and for his wife Marg and their family at this difficult time of loss. Paul’s quiet wisdom was a blessing to our parish for many years. May Marg and their family feel the love and support of our community.
* Please pray for Dianne F. who is recovering from knee surgery, and in thanksgiving for her mother Shirley who is back home and feeling better. May they both continue to heal.
* Prayers are requested for Janet S who is having issues with mobility, though her spirit remains strong.
*.Please continue to pray for healing for Crystal M. who is home recovering after suffering a cardiac arrest. We are so thankful for her continued recovery, and happy to see her masked face at Mass!
* Please continue to pray for Nancy J. as she recovers from another surgery. And also for Peder as he cares for her.
* Please pray for Pat S. who is struggling with the isolation during the closure. Contact the parish staff for her contact information if you would like to call or send her a card.
* Please pray also for all our elders who are isolated and unable to join our community for Mass or Zoom during this time.

Thank You from St. Ann
The St. Ann Parish staff would like to thank some of the parishioners who work tirelessly behind the scenes at our church. This week we’d like to thank:

* Sr. Joanne Clavel – for providing us with the Franciscan Corner reflections for our Bulletin each week, and for being one of the people who counted the collection pre-Covid. We so appreciate you!

* Dale Kinzer – for so many years of counting the collection every week; and for his willingness to continue serving our community by being on the parish council. We so appreciate all that you have done for St. Ann!

Community Outreach
The staff is looking for ways to keep our community connected. One idea is to have a letter writing campaign to reach out to parishioners who are unable to attend Mass or the Zoom prayer services. The staff have already been calling and writing to parishioners. If you are interested in being involved in writing letters to parishioners – or have suggestions for parishioners who are unable to join us for Zoom or Mass who we should contact – please email or call the office. We can provide cards and stamps, if needed.

Franciscan Corner
Outside the walls. The old city of Assisi is built on a steep hill surrounded by a wall or reddish stone. In order to enter the city, you have to climb up the hill, and then enter thru one of the arched gates. Inside the city, the people were “safe”. The outcasts lived outside the city, down the hill. Who were these people? Anyone not acceptable—the lepers, the poor. It was outside the walls that Francis lived after he relinquished his family’s wealth and became the poor man of Assisi that we call him today. But why did he live outside the walls? Because that’s where he found people in need of mercy. That’s where he found the poor, the unacceptable, and the lepers. Francis did not live to be safe, he lived to be an instrument of peace, he lived to bring peace and mercy and acceptance to those were labeled “dispensable”. Today we are told to “stay home, stay safe”, but we can still go outside the gates, the walls of our own making and be peacemakers, and be mercy-givers. Take time each day to pray for those in need of peace, for those in need of mercy.
(Thank you to Sr. Joanne for sharing these Franciscan reflections with us each week.)

These links are also available on the home page of the parish website!

In order to celebrate Mass during Phase 2, we are required to limit the number of parishioners at each Mass to 45 people, and to keep contact information on file for all those attending Mass. To ensure that there is space for those who want to attend Mass, we ask that you sign up ahead of time using the links above. If you need assistance signing up, call the parish office.

Due to the restrictions, we also require that everyone wear a mask to Mass, and use the hand sanitizer provided at the doors upon entering. We ask that parishioners enter by the front doors only so that we can keep an accurate count. Thank you for your understanding.

Prayer Service on Zoom – Sunday at 11:00 AM
We will continue to offer the Prayer service on Zoom for those members of our community who are unable to attend Mass, so that we can continue to gather together in prayer. The time of this service has been moved to 11:00 AM on Sunday, so that Father Patrick and others are able to celebrate Mass and also join us for the Zoom prayer service. Through the Summer months, we are using a new format – Lectio Divina – for our prayer service, which allows for meditation, listening and sharing. We will allow for further discussion after the prayer service for those who would like to continue the conversation.

Readers Needed for Mass and Zoom Prayer Services in June!
We are in need of readers for both Masses and for the Zoom Prayer services! Please use the link below to sign up if you are attending Mass and are willing to read or if you would like to be a reader for one of the Zoom services. We only need one reader per Mass to do 1st and 2nd readings, the responsorial psalm in between if musicians are not available, and the prayers of the faithful (found in the red missal book) following the homily. As we change to a new format of Prayer service for the Summer, we will also need at least one reader. If you need assistance to sign up, call the parish office. Thank you for your participation!

Franciscan Corner
By now our gardens are in full bloom. Colorful flowers brightening our yards, fruit on our trees, perhaps an overabundance of vegetables bursting forth. Our work is paying off! Maybe Francis is hidden now, maybe the flowers (or the weeds) have taken over. But still he stands. He remains constant, watching us work, being there with us, in these graced moments of our lives. As you reach out to uncover the beauty of your garden, to uncover the statue of Francis, do not forget to uncover your own beauty, the person God has made you to be this day, this time. Be open to His tending of your being, allow Him to pull the weeds, to water tenderly and to glory in His creation!
(Thank you to Sr. Joanne for sharing these Franciscan reflections with us.)
